How to Manage Credit Cards After Bankruptcy
Some people are tempted into overspending by the convenience of credit cards, thinking somehow that they will not have to pay for these purchases later. These are the same people who have trouble managing their money even sans credit card, so just use your imagination here as to how well they deal with the responsibility; and the possibility of overspending which a credit card offers.
Monetary Caution is Needed with Credit Cards After Bankruptcy
Having your first credit card after bankruptcy is a great feeling, but you must be very careful. Don’t go and apply for several right away; how many credit cards do you really need? Think carefully about your needs here. Some people have a wallet full of credit cards, but you don’t really need more than two. Other than the two most important, rid yourself of credit cards in order to keep temptation at bay.
Before you get rid of these credit cards after bankruptcy, you of course must pay off your balances first. Depending on how your credit standing is at the time, your credit card company may be willing to work with you to make a payment plan to get your debt paid off.
If you happen to have really bad credit however (this would be after getting a credit card, of course, since it is nearly impossible to receive a credit card if one’s credit is truly in bad shape), then things may be handled a little differently. You will instead have to call and inquire with the customer service department of each credit card company with which you are a cardholder about payment options.
As far as consolidating credit cards after bankruptcy is concerned, pay off the cards with the highest balances first. Next, concentrate on the next largest balance and so on, until all of your cards are paid in full. This method may seem slow going at first, but once that first card is paid off, things will begin to happen much faster.
Ensuring that your credit cards are still available for your use after bankruptcy depends on your particular situation and your credit card company. You may require the services of a financial planner in order to get out of debt. With a little help and a lot of planning, you will be able to restore your credit and get back on your feet before you know it.
