Paul Emard is Tambourine Man

‘Paul Emard is Tambourine Man’ was produced as my senior project for the Technocultural Studies program at UC Davis, 2006-07. The film was shown only once in public at the Varsity Theater in the Spring of 2007 as a fundraiser for the UC Davis Band. Beyond the misgivings I have about the technical aspects and structure of the film, I wish I would have deepened my look into Paul’s life, his condition, and his relation to his living family members. It became apparent after finishing the film that I had only skimmed the surface of a very interesting person. But as it stands, it’s a nice tribute to a great friend… and the raucous Cal-Aggie Band ;) About the Film: Paul Emard is Tambourine Man (2007) is the story of Paul Emard, a developmentally disabled 59 year-old man who has spent the last 40 years of his life performing with the University of California, Davis Marching Band. Like most people, Paul has a general idea what he wants out of life: family, friends, love… happiness. But with his family 1000 miles away and the prospect of lasting love still a dream, Paul finds himself torn between the future and his love of musical performance. Relying heavily on archival images, film and audio, Paul Emard is Tambourine Man unravels the story of Paul’s life, the band that has become his second family, the memories he loves so dearly, and the ongoing conflict between his wants, needs, loves and dreams.
