Small Business Taxes
Small businesses make up the backbone of our economy and the small business taxes do as well. Many individuals realize a dream of entering the world of the self-employed by launching their own business. There are many particulars to work out. Where will the business be located? Where will the required financing come from? What’s the best way to promote the business? Pushed to the background is the subject of business taxes. There is not anything very interesting about this issue, unless you overlook a tax deadline and neglect to send a payment to the appropriate department. Payroll tax and sales tax are 2 tax areas of special concern to the business owner.
Payroll Taxes
The collecting and paying in of payroll taxes is the responsibility of the business owner. When you were an member of staff, these taxes were deducted from your paycheck each pay period. Federal income taxes need to be deducted from all non-exempt employees. Most states have a state income tax that has to be collected and in some municipalities, there’s a local income tax, too. Then there are the Social Security, Medicare and federal and state unemployment insurance taxes to deal with. All these are business taxes that are your responsibility, as the owner, to deduct from your employees wages and pay into the appropriate department. To avoid future headaches, it’s critical that these taxes be paid prior to their respective deadlines.
Sales Taxes
Sales taxes are a very different form of business tax that requires some study. Whether sales tax is owed is dependent upon the type of transaction. It’s well for those business owner to understand what types of transactions are taxable. This knowledge prevents paying unnecessary sales tax and saves the owner money. If you are functioning as a seller, then you will be collecting sales tax and paying it to the state. Business taxes aren’t the same for all enterprises. Certain industries have special rules regarding sales and use taxes. Building, reselling and service providers should be aware of how these special rules affect them.
Starting a small business is exciting and important work. Our economic future depends upon well-informed business owners to provide employment for millions of people. Even when you hire a firm to take care of your tax obligations, understanding business taxes is prime knowledge that is important for business owners to have.
Small businesses are vital to the growth of our economy and the small business taxes that are assessed are just as important because of the revenue it generates.
